WRITINGS OF EARLY LATTER-DAY SAINTS AND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES Compiled by Dr. Milton V. Backman, Jr., In Cooperation with Keith W. Perkins, Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, with various additions by BOAP. PREFACE A primary purpose of the database collection, "Writings of Early Latter-day Saints and their Contemporaries," located at the Brigham Young University, is to aid individuals in searching for information contained in various documents written by early Latter-day Saints. Searches by words, phrases and selected themes may be conducted by using computers. To assist in searching, the compiled records have been edited. For example, grammar and spelling has been standardized (or in some instances preferred spelling was inserted in brackets) and punctuation has been added for sake of clarity. Most records taken from published sources or some typescripts have been previously edited. Subsequently, there has been a standardization (primarily in spelling and punctuation) of all records. In most instances, writings of Latter-day Saints have been limited to descriptions of events that occurred prior to the exodus to Utah in 1846. To provide a flavor of experiences shared by individuals who traveled west, some works have been extended to the settlement of pioneers in Western communities or to the end of their writings. In a few instances selected portions of diaries, journals, autobiographies have been included in the collection with the aim of emphasizing experiences judged to be of general interest to students and scholars of LDS Church history (such as accounts describing social life, emphasizing religious experiences and reporting significant events in the history of the restoration movement.) Portions of some missionary journals, for example, were omitted that concentrated on communities visited by the elders. Students interested in the past are encouraged to locate the original records and read the documents as initially recorded. Two works that have proved most helpful in locating writings of early Latter-day Saints included in this collection are Davis Bitton, Guide to Mormon Diaries and Autobiographies (Provo, Utah: Brigham Young University Press, 1930) and Hyrum L. Andrus and Richard E. Bennett, comp. and ed., Mormon Manuscripots to 1846: A Guide to the Holdings of the Harold B. Lee Library (Provo, Utah: Archives and Manuscripts, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, 1977).
